Resin vs Plastic: What Each Material Is Actually For

Most comparisons of resin and plastic are written as if one of them is better. They are not competing to do the same job. The two materials exist because of two completely different economics, and once you understand that, almost every practical difference at the bench stops being a surprise and starts being predictable.

This guide covers what each material is genuinely good at, where each one will let you down, and how to prime, glue and store a resin figure kit so it survives the next ten years on a shelf. It is written for display painters working at the scales we sell, which run from about 1/12 up to 1/8, plus 75mm single figures and chibi formats.

Everything Remerlinds sells is a 3D printed resin figure kit, and every kit arrives unpainted. That is a deliberate choice rather than a shortcut, and the reasons for it are the same reasons resin exists at all.

The difference starts with the mould, not the material

An injection moulded plastic kit begins with a block of tool steel. Someone cuts a cavity into it, in two or more halves, to a tolerance measured in hundredths of a millimetre. That tool costs thousands and then produces hundreds of thousands of identical parts for very little more. Every design decision in a plastic kit exists to pay that tool back.

This is why plastic sprues look the way they do. Locating pins and sockets are there because a part that self aligns can be assembled by anyone. The split line runs where it does because the two halves of a steel mould have to physically pull apart, which means deep undercuts are impossible. A cloak that folds back on itself, a hand that passes in front of a chest, hair that lifts away from a neck: steel cannot withdraw from those shapes, so they get simplified, or split into more parts, or designed out.

A 3D printer has no tool. The first copy and the thousandth cost the same. Nothing has to pull out of anything, so undercuts are free, and a shape that would need a four part slide mould in steel is just a shape. It also means a subject expected to sell forty copies can exist at all, which is the entire reason the garage kit scene grew up around resin in the first place.

Plastic is not the cheaper, worse material. Plastic is the material that has to pay for its own mould. Everything else follows from that one sentence.

It also means one common piece of advice is simply wrong when applied to us. A printed resin part has never touched a mould, so it has no mould lines, no flash, no casting seams and no vent stubs. There is nothing there to scrape off. What a printed part can carry is a support mark, which is a different thing with a different fix, and we cover it further down.

What plastic does better, and it is not a short list

It is worth being direct about this, because a shop that sells resin telling you resin always wins is not information, it is advertising.

Plastic is far more forgiving of being handled. Polystyrene flexes a little before it breaks, so a dropped plastic model usually survives, and a thin spear tends to bend rather than snap. It goes together faster and more accurately, because those locating pins do the alignment for you and the tolerances came out of the same tool every time. Plastic cement is also genuinely stronger than any glue used on resin: it is a solvent that melts the two surfaces and lets them fuse as one piece, which is a weld rather than an adhesive bond.

And at volume, plastic is cheaper by a wide margin. If you need thirty of the same model for a unit, plastic wins on cost, on assembly time, on durability and on the simple fact that they are all identical.

What resin does better

Surface resolution is the obvious one, and it is visible without a magnifier once a kit is painted. Layer heights on a modern resin printer are small enough that the limiting factor becomes the sculpt rather than the machine. Fabric reads as fabric. A face has an expression rather than an approximation of one.

The less obvious advantage is subject matter. Because there is no tool to amortise, a sculptor can make something that will only ever sell in small numbers, and it can still reach you. That is why our catalogue looks the way it does, and it is the reason a piece with a flowing cloak, loose hair and a complicated silhouette is a normal product for us rather than an engineering problem.

Resin also suits made to order production. Nothing sits in a warehouse. Your kit is printed after you order it, which is why lead times exist at all, and why the catalogue can carry several hundred kits without several hundred kits sitting in boxes.

Priming resin is the one step that catches people out

If a resin figure has a reputation for chipping, this is nearly always why. Cured resin is dense and very smooth. Plastic has a slight surface tooth that gives primer something to hold. The fix is not complicated. Use a primer intended for smooth,non porous surfaces rather than a general hobby primer, put it on in thin coats rather than one heavy one, and let it cure completely before you handle the model. Thin coats matter more than the brand does. A heavy coat skins over on the outside while the layer underneath is still soft, and that soft layer is what fails later.

Test it before you commit. Prime a small area low on the model, leave it a day, press a piece of ordinary tape firmly onto it and pull the tape off. Glue, dry fitting, and the parts that snap

Plastic cement does nothing at all on resin. It works by dissolving polystyrene, and there is no polystyrene present, so it will sit wet on the surface and then evaporate. Resin joints need cyanoacrylate, usually sold as super glue, or a two part epoxy for anything large or load bearing.

Both bond to the surface rather than into it, which means the surface is what matters. Scoring both mating faces lightly with a hobby knife before you glue gives the adhesive a mechanical key and makes a visible difference to how much abuse the joint takes later. Epoxy is worth the extra handling time on a heavy arm or a figure joined to a base at a single ankle.

Dry fit everything first. Our kits are test fitted before they are packed, so the parts do go together, but a printed kit has no locating pins and alignment is a decision you make rather than one the parts make for you. Hold each joint together dry, find the position you want, mark it with a pencil, then glue one joint at a time and let each one set before moving on.

Be careful with the thin parts. Swords, spears, staffs, antennae and outstretched fingers are the pieces that break, and they break from bending rather than from impact. If you need to correct the angle of something thin, the answer is warmth and patience rather than force. Support marks, and what to do about them

Every printed part is grown attached to a support structure, and where those supports meet the model they leave small contact points. We remove the supports before the kit ships, so what reaches you is a scatter of very small raised nubs, typically between 0.3 and 0.6mm across, usually placed on undersides and inside surfaces where they will not be seen. At normal viewing distance on a finished, painted model they are invisible.

If you want them gone entirely, a light pass with a fine sanding stick or the flat of a hobby knife takes them off in seconds. This is cosmetic tidying, not repair, and it is a completely different operation from scraping a mould line off a plastic sprue, which involves running a blade along a raised ridge that runs the length of a part.

One safety note that applies to any sanding of cured resin: it produces a fine dust you should not breathe. Work somewhere ventilated and wear an FFP2 or N95 mask. Our bench setup guide covers ventilation alongside the rest of the workspace.

Heat, light, and where a finished kit lives

Cured resin softens with sustained heat and yellows with sustained ultraviolet light. Neither happens quickly, and neither is a defect, but both are worth designing your display around.

In practice that means keeping finished pieces off sunny windowsills, away from radiators, and out of a car in summer, which is where more resin figures are lost than anywhere else. A cabinet with UV filtering glass is worth the money if a piece is going to sit in a bright room for years. Paler resins show yellowing sooner than dark ones, and a fully painted and varnished model is far better protected than a bare one, because the paint is doing the blocking.

If a thin part has taken a slight bend in transit, warm water is the safe way to correct it. Let the part sit in water that is comfortably hot to the hand, not boiling, until it gives slightly, move it into position, then hold it there under cold water until it sets. Do not use a heat gun, a hairdryer on full, a radiator or a flame. Those apply heat far faster than the part conducts it, and the usual result is a permanently deformed or bubbled surface rather than a corrected one.

Once a piece is finished, a matte or satin varnish is the single most effective thing you can do to protect it. It shields exactly the places that wear first, which are base edges and the high points your fingers find when you pick a model up. Which material for which project

If you are still deciding, the short version is this. Pick the material by what the finished object is for. Something that will sit on a shelf and be looked at should be resin, because every advantage resin has is a display advantage. Something that will be picked up, carried, set down on a table and packed away again should be plastic, because every advantage plastic has is a handling advantage.

What actually arrives in a Remerlinds box

Every kit is printed after you order it, then finished by hand before it ships. Supports are removed, the parts are washed and fully UV cured, the kit is test fitted so we know it goes together, it is checked over, and every part is bagged separately. Packaging is recycled paper and bubble wrap. We do not use foam.

Kits ship unpainted, at one of three preparation levels. Bronze, which we call DIY Ready, is the kit as printed and typically ships in 2 to 5 business days. Silver, or Detail Ready, adds further finishing and typically ships in 4 to 8 business days; it is the option most people choose. Gold, or Paint Ready, arrives primed in your chosen colour and typically ships in 6 to 14 business days.

The sculpts are licensed from the digital sculptors who make them, which is how a catalogue of this range exists without a warehouse behind it. If you want a first resin kit at a manageable size, the Frodo Baggins 75mm figure is a single character with a straightforward build. For a more involved two figure piece there is the Gimli and Legolas 1/10 duo, and for a statement piece at larger scale the Urbased Breathe the Wilderness 1/9 kit stands about 34cm tall.
