Resin Kit Safety: The Spray Can Is the Risk, Not the Resin

Search for resin safety and almost everything you find is written for someone who owns a printer. Gloves against liquid photopolymer, isopropyl alcohol by the litre, ventilation for the vat, what to do when a bottle goes over. All of it is sound advice and none of it describes what happens at your bench, because the step it protects you from is the step we already did.

A Remerlinds kit arrives with the supports removed, washed in alcohol, fully UV cured and hand checked twice. You never open a bottle of resin, never run a wash tank, never handle a wet print. What is left in front of you is solid plastic, a tube of glue, some sandpaper and, at some point, a can of primer.

And that last item is the one that deserves your attention. Of everything on a figure painting bench, the aerosol can is the thing with the strongest safety case against it, and it is the thing hobbyists treat most casually. This guide is about getting the proportions right: real care where it is earned, and no theatre where it is not.

What curing actually changes

Liquid photopolymer resin is a mixture of acrylate and methacrylate monomers. Those monomers are skin sensitisers, which is a specific thing rather than a general warning, and we will come back to what it means. Curing links them into a solid network, and the industry body for UV curable materials treats full post curing as the point at which a printed part can be handled without gloves at all, and at which the material can go in ordinary household waste.

That is the threshold your kit has already crossed before it is packed. It is washed to remove uncured resin from the surface, then given a full UV cure, then checked under good lighting by two people. If a part ever arrives with a tacky spot, that is a genuine fault rather than something to sand through, and the right move is to photograph it and contact us rather than to work on it.

One honest caveat, because it costs nothing to say and it explains why gloves are still a reasonable habit. No polymer of this type reaches one hundred percent conversion. Curing consumes monomer and reduces what remains available, which is why the safety picture changes so completely, but "fully cured" is a practical threshold rather than a claim that nothing is left. A pair of nitrile gloves costs a few cents and removes the question.

Where you are in the process, and what that removes

It is worth being concrete about which hazards belong to which job, because the two are constantly mixed together online.

Things that belong to running a printer, and are not yours. Handling liquid resin. Skin contact with uncured material. Alcohol wash tanks and the vapour off them. Disposing of contaminated resin, filters and cleanup materials, which genuinely are treated as hazardous waste. Cleaning a vat. Getting resin on a work surface that someone later touches.

Things that are yours. Dust, if you sand. Solvent vapour and propellant, if you spray. Superglue fumes and superglue on your fingers. Sharp tools. That is the honest list, and three of the four are ordinary hobby hazards that have nothing to do with resin as a material.

Which of those you meet depends on the finish level you ordered, and the difference is larger than it looks. Finish levels explained covers the tiers in full, but in safety terms:

  • Bronze, DIY Ready. Supports removed, washed, cured and quality checked. You sand, fill, assemble, prime and paint. You will generate dust and you will use primer. Usually ships in 2 to 5 business days.
  • Silver, Detail Ready. Support marks sanded and visible holes filled by us. You assemble, do minor finishing, prime and paint. Much less dust, still primer. Usually ships in 4 to 8 business days.
  • Gold, Paint Ready. All gaps filled and the figure primed in black, white or grey. You assemble and paint. No sanding, and no spraying. Usually ships in 6 to 14 business days.

Read that last line again, because it is the most useful safety information in this article. The two steps with any real exposure attached to them are sanding and priming, and Gold removes both. Not reduces, removes. If you paint indoors, in a flat, with no extraction and no outdoor space, that is a more meaningful choice than any respirator you could buy.

Sanding dust, and how much care it really needs

Cured resin dust is fine, it hangs in the air, and it is not something to breathe. That is the whole of the established position, and it is worth knowing that it is a thinner position than the internet implies. University safety offices that cover printing tell people to wear a respirator when sanding printed parts, and note that the powders may cause respiratory irritation. Nobody has published a study on someone smoothing a support mark on a 20 cm figure, and any article that gives you a confident hazard grade for that is making it up.

So here is proportionate advice rather than borrowed industrial advice.

Wet sand where you can. Water stops dust becoming airborne, which is the only thing that matters. One caveat that comes straight from dust control guidance and is routinely ignored: wetting the part beforehand does not work. The water has to be there for the whole time you are sanding, so keep the paper and the surface actually wet, not damp at the start.

If you dry sand, catch it or mask up. A disposable particle mask is sensible, and an FFP2 is easy to find and cheap. You do not need an industrial half mask with cartridges to smooth a seam, and anyone telling you that has copied a construction dust standard across without thinking. Sanding a whole large figure dry, indoors, for an hour is a different question from a minute on a support mark, and you can judge which you are doing.

Eye protection is about particles, not chemicals. Ordinary safety spectacles are the right answer for sanding. Chemical splash goggles are the answer to a splash hazard, and there is no liquid here to splash. Save those for the spray step, where they are genuinely indicated.

Do not put the slurry down the drain. Wet sanding solves the air problem and creates a sludge problem, and general laboratory guidance is consistent that solids and sludges do not go into drains regardless of what they are. Let the water evaporate off in a shallow tray, or wipe the slurry up with paper and bin the paper.

Clean up before you take the mask off rather than after, wipe down with a damp cloth rather than blowing dust around, and do not eat at the bench. Aerosols are the serious one

This is the section that should have been the whole article.

A can of primer is classified as an extremely flammable aerosol containing gas under pressure. A typical one also carries warnings for serious eye irritation, for drowsiness and dizziness, and in many formulations a suspected carcinogen classification. None of that is about resin. It is true of the same can whether you point it at a resin figure, a plastic kit or a garden chair.

Three things about spraying are worth internalising.

Most of what leaves the can does not land on the model. Spray guidance puts overspray losses above half, and that half is in the air around you. A figure is a small target and a spray pattern is not.

Vapour keeps coming off after you stop. The drying film continues releasing solvent, which is why safety data sheets say to maintain ventilation not just while spraying but until the vapour is gone. Spraying by an open window and then closing it is the wrong half of the instruction.

Enclosed spaces are the recognised danger. Guidance on spraying flammable liquids is blunt that the risk in a confined space cannot be overstated, and that in an unventilated enclosure a vapour concentration builds far faster than people expect. A hobby bench is not an industrial spray booth, and the quantities are not comparable, but the direction of the advice is not in doubt. A small bathroom with the door shut is the worst place in the house to prime a model, and it is where a lot of people do it.

What that means in practice. Spray outdoors when you can, or at a window with air moving out past you rather than into the room. Keep the ignition sources in mind, since they are all domestic: a heater, a pilot light, a soldering iron left on. Give the model its drying time somewhere ventilated instead of on the desk beside you. Wear a mask if you are spraying more than briefly, and this is the one step where a half mask with an organic vapour filter is genuinely the right tool rather than overkill. Brushing or airbrushing a water based acrylic primer is a much lower exposure job than a rattle can, and if your space is difficult that swap is worth more than any protective equipment. Choosing a primer for resin kits covers the options, and setting up a painting space covers the bench itself.

Glue, blades and the boring injuries

The things that actually send hobbyists to a pharmacy are not exotic.

Cyanoacrylate bonds skin instantly and its vapour stings eyes and airways, so glue with some air movement and keep your fingers away from your face. Do not pull bonded skin apart; warm soapy water and patience separate it, and a pharmacist can deal with anything worse. Accelerator sprays are solvents too and belong under the ventilation rule above. The same goes for the thinners used in oil washes over resin kits, which is the one other technique on this bench that involves a real solvent.

Hobby knives cut towards whatever is in front of them, which is often a hand holding a small part. Cut away from yourself, change blades before they get blunt enough to need force, and hold parts in a clamp rather than in your palm.

Two part putties and fillers are mild but not nothing, and gloves are easier than scrubbing them off. Keep everything on the bench away from children and pets, which matters more for a bottle of glue than it ever did for the figure.

Sensitisation, and why it is worth avoiding once

This is the one piece of chemistry worth carrying around, and it applies mostly to people who print rather than to people who buy kits.

A sensitiser is not an irritant. An irritant bothers everyone in proportion to the dose and stops when the exposure stops. A sensitiser trains your immune system, and the first exposures often produce nothing visible at all. Once that switch flips, the European chemicals agency is unambiguous that it is irreversible and cannot be cured, and that it can mean a lifelong sensitivity to that substance. Symptoms fade if you avoid the allergen, but the sensitivity does not go away.

That is why the advice around liquid resin is so insistent, and why it is not overcautious. It is also why a printer owner who has been careless for a year and had no reaction has learned nothing reassuring.

For a cured kit the exposure route is largely closed, which is the point of curing. Nobody has published anything specific about sanding a cured hobby part, so the honest position is that the risk looks small and is not quantified. Given that a box of nitrile gloves is trivially cheap and sensitisation is permanent, wearing them while sanding is an easy trade rather than a precaution you have to believe in.

If you develop a rash, itching or blistering on your hands after a session, or a cough or chest tightness that arrives with the hobby and goes away without it, stop and see a doctor rather than pushing on. Repeat exposure is what makes this worse.

What to do with the waste

The internet will tell you that your sanding dust is regulated hazardous waste under EU law. That is not right, and it is worth explaining why, because the same confusion sends people to a chemical waste depot with a bag of dust while pouring the genuinely awkward stuff down the sink.

The hazardous classification attaches to uncured resin and to the materials contaminated with it: wipes, filters, failed prints, dirty alcohol. Fully cured resin is treated as suitable for household waste. And the EU waste framework rules place their obligations on member states rather than on you, with mixed household waste specifically carved out of the control articles people cite.

In the Netherlands the working distinction is simple and matches this. Liquid and reactive things are small chemical waste: paint, thinner, brush cleaner, solvents. Hardened and solid things are ordinary residual waste, and the public guidance explicitly puts brushes with hardened paint in with normal rubbish rather than chemical waste. Cured resin offcuts, sanding dust and used abrasives sit on the solid side of that line.

So: bag your dust and used sandpaper and put them in the normal bin. Take leftover solvents, thinners, brush cleaner and part used paint to your local chemical waste point. Never pour any of it down a drain. If you have a lot of anything, or you are unsure, your municipality's waste page is the authority and it takes a minute to check.

If something goes wrong

Nothing in this list is likely, and all of it is worth knowing before you need it.

For anything in the eyes, flush with clean running water for a full fifteen minutes, which is longer than instinct suggests and is the standard recommendation. Remove contact lenses if you can do it easily. Get medical attention if irritation persists.

For skin contact with anything wet, wash with soap and water and remove contaminated clothing. For solvent vapour, get into fresh air and stay there until it clears. If it does not clear, or if you feel short of breath, get medical help rather than waiting it out.

Keep the packaging or the product name of whatever was involved. A doctor can do far more with a product name than with a description of a smell, and the safety data sheet for any paint or primer is a search away.

What we cannot tell you

Two gaps, stated plainly, because a safety article that pretends to completeness is worse than one that does not.

There is no authoritative guidance written for your situation. Every serious document on resin safety, from industry bodies, national health agencies and university safety offices, is written for the person operating the printer. The buyer who receives a cured part and sands, glues and paints it is addressed by none of them. Everything above is the closest defensible reading of guidance written for an adjacent job, plus the aerosol advice, which is well established and not resin specific at all.

Choosing a tier to sand less

The practical conclusion is a purchasing one, which feels self serving until you look at what the tiers actually do.

Every kit ships unpainted, made to order in the Netherlands, printed in resin, washed, fully cured, test fitted, quality checked and bagged part by part, in recycled paper and bubble wrap. What changes between tiers is how much surface work is left for you, and surface work is exposure.

Bronze leaves you sanding and priming. Silver takes the support marks and visible holes off your list, which is most of the dust. Gold fills the gaps and arrives primed in black, white or grey, so both the dust and the aerosol are gone before the box reaches you, and what you do is assemble and paint.

Scale matters too, and not in the way people assume. A larger figure has more surface, so a Bronze kit at 34 cm is a great deal more sanding than a Bronze kit at 12 cm.
