Object-source lighting, or OSL, uses paint to suggest that an object on a miniature is giving off light. The effect needs a readable source and a believable relationship between the surrounding light and shadow.

A lantern, a small magical element or an illuminated panel can become the focus of a painting project. Start with one source and a limited area around it. That gives you a clear exercise in placement and contrast before you attempt a whole scene with competing lights.

Choose one source and a view that explains it

Pick an object whose position you can understand from the angle you expect people to see first. Make its relationship with a nearby surface part of the plan.

For a first exercise, choose a source beside an accessible area such as a sleeve, cloak fold or simple panel. A tiny recessed eye surrounded by a complicated face may demand more precision than you want to practise at the same time. You are choosing a manageable painting problem, not proving that a particular miniature size is easiest.

Use the sculpt you actually have. If the kit does not include a lantern, do not treat a tutorial photograph as evidence that a lantern should have arrived in the box. An invented light source added through conversion is a separate project with its own assembly choices.

Write a short scene note: a warm lantern catches the front of the cloak while the back remains cooler and darker. It need not be a story with names and lore. Its job is to keep your later colour choices connected to the same intention.

Choose a second viewing angle as a check. The main view may show the source and its effect together; the side view can reveal whether your painted light has spread onto an area you meant to keep outside it. Keep both views in mind before committing to the brightest marks.

Plan the lit surfaces before worrying about smooth blends

Identify which surfaces face the source and which are blocked from it. For a simple direct-light study, leave an opaque obstruction's far side outside that source's painted glow.

Light direction matters more than placing highlights automatically at the top of every detail. A source below a face suggests a different arrangement from an overhead light. Think about the actual pose rather than copying a list of anatomical areas from another figure.

A small light held near the intended source position can help you study the shape. Keep it clear of the miniature and use it briefly as a reference. Its size and placement may not match the imaginary source exactly, so the photograph is a planning aid rather than a stencil for every brush stroke.

Make a simple map on a photograph or sketch. Mark the source, a few areas that should receive its light and the areas you want to preserve as shadow. Do this on the reference, without drawing permanent guides on the model before you have a plan.

Include the base if it belongs in the light's path. A lantern beside the ground and a light held high above a shoulder suggest different compositions. There is no universal radius in millimetres that establishes where every painted glow must stop.

Leave complicated reflected light for a later study. For this first project, a clear direct-light pattern makes it easier to judge whether the placement works. You can still keep ordinary ambient shading elsewhere so that the rest of the figure remains readable.

Give the source room to look bright

Keep a clear value hierarchy in the area you are painting: a bright source, a less bright nearby effect and a darker surrounding area. Value means how light or dark a colour appears.

A strong colour alone does not guarantee the impression of light. If the surrounding surface becomes intensely blue but no lighter than before, it may read as a painted blue patch. Compare the source with the area immediately beside it before adding more saturation.

For this exercise, reserve your lightest small mark for the emitting part. The lantern frame need not be as bright as its imagined illuminated pane. Keeping those shapes distinct helps the viewer understand which part is meant to generate the light.

Choose a limited colour plan you can repeat. For example, record a muted cloak colour, a lighter local highlight and a warm tint. These are artistic starting choices rather than a formula for how every fabric physically reflects coloured light.

Make a small painted sample beside your colour notes. Compare the intended underpainting with the same area after a transparent tint dries. If the tint hides the contrast you wanted, adjust the sample before repeating it over the model.

Do not assume that pure white is the only possible final colour for every light. A pale coloured centre can fit your scheme. What matters for this beginner exercise is its relationship with the nearby painted effect, rather than a compulsory recipe tied to a particular hue.

Start from the kit's actual preparation level

Check the order and plan assembly before starting the lighting effect. A painted illusion still needs a sound, accessible surface to work on.

Dry fit the components and check brush access around the chosen light source. Decide whether you can paint the nearby surface after assembly or whether a sensible subassembly would help. Keep the final pose available as a reference so that separately painted parts agree when brought together.

Finish the relevant preparation before trying to perfect the effect. If a supplied surface or connection raises a concern, document it and use the order's support route. Lighting paint should not hide an unresolved fit issue or become an excuse to add a new home washing or curing step.

Build the effect in a short brush-led sequence

Use a pointed brush you can control and make the first pass small enough to evaluate. An airbrush is optional; it is not a requirement for learning this effect.

Start with the surrounding base colours and the light placement already planned. A small local glow can be developed late in a project. If the source will dominate most of the figure, account for it from the beginning rather than trying to repaint every finished surface around a new idea.

  1. Establish the source. Paint the intended emitting shape with a light underpainting, keeping its frame or surrounding border distinct.
  2. Place the nearby light. Add lighter paint to the selected facing surfaces. Work on one bounded area such as the front of a sleeve and leave the planned shadows alone.
  3. Check the relationship. View the source and sleeve together before making either area larger. Confirm that the effect still has a clear centre.
  4. Tint selectively. If your plan uses a transparent colour layer, apply it over the prepared area with controlled loading. Follow the paint's guidance and allow it to dry before judging another pass.
  5. Refine a few edges. Pick out selected edges that face the source. Keep their treatment subordinate to the source and consistent with your placement map.
  6. Stop for a wider view. Put the brush down and compare the front and side views with your original intention.

This is an exercise sequence, not a claim that every artist must paint in this order. Keep a note of the paint combination and the result so that the next component follows the same logic. Do not use a universal dilution ratio or coat count as a substitute for looking at the paint on your own surface.

Use edges and glazes for different jobs

A precise edge mark can describe a small facing surface, while a transparent glaze can adjust a broader area's colour. Choose the operation for the mark you want to make.

For an edge, turn the model to an angle that gives your brush comfortable access. Support the figure through its base or another substantial area. Keep the line limited to the portion that belongs in the light rather than outlining the whole component in the glow colour.

For a glaze, test the mixture and brush loading on a suitable sample first. Aim for the degree of colour change you want without an uncontrolled puddle. Follow the paint and medium instructions rather than assuming every acrylic, ink or single-coat paint can use the same dilution.

Let each area dry before deciding whether to repeat it. If you see a tide mark or uneven patch, assess the local paint rather than automatically flooding a larger area. Keep the surrounding base colour available for small corrections along the boundary.

Textured and smooth surfaces may invite different brushwork, but no tool guarantees a convincing light pattern. Drybrushing or spraying can still place colour beyond the intended area. Choose a method you can control and return to the placement check after using it.

Diagnose the effect before repainting the whole figure

Compare the result with the original scene note. Identify whether the problem is placement, brightness, colour or the physical condition of the paint.

If the glow reads as a stain, look at the value relationship. More of the same transparent colour may deepen the tint without creating the contrast you need. Test an adjustment to the local light area on your sample before changing the finished surface.

If the effect has spread too far, restore selected surrounding areas with their original paint colours where appropriate. Work from a clear boundary in the plan. A blanket dark wash can change recesses and surfaces you wanted to keep, so it is not an automatic correction for every misplaced highlight.

If the source has lost its focus, compare its emitting shape with its border. You may need a more distinct small bright area or a cleaner separation from the housing. Do not brighten every nearby edge at the same time; that makes it harder to tell which adjustment helped.

Review the miniature in ordinary viewing conditions

Check the painted result under consistent neutral lighting before using a dramatic coloured lamp for a photograph. You want to judge the illusion made by paint.

Keep one overview and one closer image from the same setup. The overview shows whether the source attracts attention; the close view helps identify a transition or edge that needs work. Use both rather than treating magnified imperfections as the only measure of the finished project.

Look from the side as well as the main view. A source hidden from a particular angle can still have an effect on a visible facing surface, so the back does not have to obey a universal rule of no colour anywhere. Judge the actual geometry and the lighting plan you chose.

Set an endpoint for this first study. It may be a lantern that clearly relates to one cloak fold, with the remaining figure painted in a simple scheme. Completing that focused exercise gives you a more useful reference than repeatedly expanding the glow because another area could also be brighter.

For the next project, change one challenge: a different source position, another surrounding material or a larger lit area. Keep your first notes and photographs so you can compare decisions. Choose a kit because you want to paint the character and can understand the pose, rather than because a scale label supposedly guarantees an easier effect.
