First Steps Before You Build

Ten minutes of prep saves hours of frustration later:

  • Dry-fit everything. Assemble the whole kit without glue first. You’ll learn the build order, spot tight or loose joints, and avoid painting yourself into a corner.
  • Lay out parts by sub-assembly. Group pieces that belong together (head + hair, base + accessories) so nothing tiny goes missing.
  • Handle thin parts gently. Blades, antennae, and hair tips are the most fragile elements until the kit is assembled and primed.
  • Keep the assembly instructions handy - and don’t hesitate to ask us if a fit seems “off.”

Smoothing Support Marks and Surfaces

Even a well-cleaned kit can have tiny nubs or contact marks where print supports once attached. Here’s how to make them vanish:

  • Start with a hobby file or 400-grit sandpaper to knock down the nub itself.
  • Step up through 800 and 1200 grit to blend the spot into the surrounding surface.
  • Wet sanding at the final stage gives the smoothest result and keeps resin dust down.
  • Work in small circles with light pressure - resin sands fast, and it’s easier to take more off than to put it back.
  • A coat of primer will reveal any spots you missed. Prime, inspect under good light, touch up, repeat.

Perfecting Joints: Tight Pegs, Loose Pegs, and the Vaseline Trick

When a Joint Is Too Tight

  • Never force it - resin can crack under pressure. Smooth the peg gently with a hobby file, test, and repeat.
  • Check the socket for tiny resin residue and clear it carefully with a file or pin vise.
  • A brief warm water soak can make delicate parts slightly more forgiving during fitting.

When a Joint Is Too Loose: Re-Keying with Milliput

This is one of our favorite garage kit techniques, and it turns a wobbly connection into a perfect custom-fit key:

  • Coat one side of the joint (for example, the socket) with a thin layer of vaseline. This acts as a release agent.
  • Press a small amount of freshly mixed Milliput onto the other side (the peg).
  • Press the two parts together in their correct final position, letting the Milliput mold itself into the joint.
  • Once the Milliput has firmed up, separate the parts. The vaseline side releases cleanly, leaving you with a perfectly keyed joint that fits snugly every time.
  • Trim any squeeze-out, let it fully cure, and your joint is display-solid - and still removable until you decide to glue.

Filling Seams and Gaps

Where two parts meet, a fine seam is normal. Here’s how to make it disappear:

  • Our recommended filler: Milliput. This two-part epoxy putty is the garage kit classic - mix equal amounts of both bars until the color is uniform, then press it into the seam.
  • Smooth Milliput with a damp finger or wet sculpting tool before it cures - water is your friend, and good smoothing now means less sanding later.
  • Once fully cured, Milliput sands and primes beautifully, blending seamlessly into the resin.
  • For hairline seams, a slightly thicker primer can be enough on its own.
  • Dry-fit and finish seams before final gluing wherever possible - it’s much easier to work on a seam you can still open up.

Fixing Warped or Bent Parts

Thin resin parts can occasionally pick up a slight bend in storage or transit. The fix is wonderfully simple:

  • Dip the part in warm water (hot tap water is plenty - never boiling) for 20–30 seconds.
  • Gently bend it back into shape with your fingers.
  • Hold the corrected shape under cold water or until the part cools - it will set in its new position.
  • Repeat in small steps rather than over-correcting in one go.

Habits That Keep Your Builds Flawless

A few nerdy habits can seriously reduce headaches:

  • Always dry-fit before gluing - then dry-fit again after any sanding or filling.
  • Give parts a quick wash with mild soapy water and let them dry fully before priming, so paint adheres perfectly.
  • Sand in good light, and rotate the part often - your eyes catch flaws at angles your hands miss.
  • Glue in stages and let each joint set before moving on.
  • Keep your Milliput sealed and your hobby files clean - well-kept tools make every build smoother.
  • Handle thin pieces gently until the kit is fully assembled and primed.

What filler should I use for seams and gaps?
We recommend Milliput. It’s a two-part epoxy putty that smooths with water, cures rock-solid, and sands and primes beautifully on resin.

A peg doesn’t fit its socket - is the kit faulty?
Almost never. Garage kit tolerances are deliberately tight. Gently file the peg in small passes and dry-fit between each one until it slides home.
