A wet palette solves one of the most irritating problems in miniature painting: acrylic paint starts changing while you are still trying to use it. The edge of a paint blob thickens, a highlight mix becomes harder to reproduce, and a smooth layer turns into a brush-marked one.
The palette cannot make every paint perfect, and it will not choose the right consistency for you. What it can do is slow moisture loss and give you a more stable mixing surface. That extra control matters when you are building skin, cloth, armour or creature tones across a detailed figure.

What a wet palette actually changes
Acrylic paint is pigment held in an acrylic polymer emulsion with water. It dries as water leaves the mixture and the polymer particles form a paint film. Thin acrylic applications can dry quickly, and temperature, airflow, humidity, paint formula and film thickness all change the working time.
A wet palette slows that change from below. A damp absorbent layer sits in a shallow tray, with a suitable hydration paper or membrane in contact with it. Moisture passes through the working surface gradually, helping small acrylic paint portions stay open longer than they would on a dry tile or plastic well.
That does not mean the paint stays exactly as it left the bottle. Moisture continues to move. A mix can become thinner, pigments can begin to separate, and a surface film can form when the lid is open for a long session. Treat the wet palette as a control system, not indefinite storage.
The practical gain is consistency. You can mix a shadow, midtone and highlight beside one another, return to each step, and make small corrections without rebuilding the whole colour ladder every few minutes. Build the three-layer system correctly
Every wet palette has the same functional stack: a shallow tray, an absorbent pad and a paint-safe hydration surface. Commercial palettes usually supply a matched pad and paper or a reusable membrane. Follow the orientation and water guidance for that system, because reusable membranes can be one-sided.

Start with a clean tray and fresh, cool water. Wet the absorbent pad evenly, place it flat in the tray, then add enough water to keep it uniformly moist. The water should not sit above the top of the pad. A visible pool at the edge is a warning that the membrane may flood once it is pressed into contact.
Lay one hydration sheet or membrane on top. Smooth out trapped air and large wrinkles so the entire surface touches the pad. Give the material a short moment to settle before adding paint. If the manufacturer marks one face for the pad, keep the blank working face upward.
Use the supplied paper or a material explicitly intended for wet palettes. Household papers vary in coatings, fibres and permeability, so a random substitute can block moisture, shed fibres or allow paint to bleed through. A home-made tray can work, but the working membrane still determines how predictably moisture reaches the paint.
Setup check
- The absorbent pad is evenly wet, flat and fully contained by the tray.
- No free water is sitting on top of the working surface.
- The paper or membrane has full contact without deep folds or bubbles.
- The paint area is clean, with enough empty room for mixing.
Set moisture by paint behaviour, not water depth
The correct moisture level is the one that keeps your acrylic responsive without silently diluting it. Exact water volumes are useful only for the palette size they were designed for. Room temperature, airflow and the starting moisture of the absorbent pad can still change the result.

Test with one small drop of familiar paint. After a few minutes, touch its edge with a clean brush. A balanced palette leaves the paint easy to draw out while the blob keeps a defined shape. If the paint forms a watery halo, spreads by itself or loses coverage rapidly, the surface is too wet. If a skin forms quickly and the mix drags, it is too dry.
Correct a flooded palette before adding more paint. Lift a corner of the membrane, remove excess water from the tray, restore full contact and test again. For a dry palette, add a small amount of water around the edge where the pad meets the tray. Do not pour water across paint already on the surface.
Check again during a long session. Top up at the perimeter when the pad begins to dry, especially in a warm room or near moving air. A wet palette slows evaporation; it does not eliminate it.
Load paint without flooding the mix
Shake or stir the paint as its maker recommends, then place a small amount on the palette. You need less than you would on a dry surface because the useful working period is longer. Several modest blobs also give you more control than one large puddle.
Keep the bottle tip away from the wet membrane. Touching the surface can pull moisture or old colour back towards the bottle. If the nozzle is messy, dispense paint with a clean tool rather than pressing harder and releasing an oversized drop.
Draw a little paint away from the main blob to create a working area. Add water or acrylic medium to that smaller portion, not automatically to everything. The wet palette already contributes moisture from below, so a thinning routine copied from a dry palette can push the mix past the consistency you want.
Load the brush from the edge of the working mix and wipe excess against the palette surface. Test the stroke before touching the figure. A good layer should leave controlled colour without filling sharp detail, pooling unexpectedly or breaking into beads.

Mix repeatable shadow and highlight steps
A wet palette becomes most valuable when you use its space deliberately. Place the darkest colour at one end and the lightest at the other. Pull small amounts into the space between them, rather than mixing the original blobs together.
Build three to five visible steps: shadow, deep midtone, base, light midtone and highlight. You do not need all five for every area, but keeping them in a row makes the progression readable. If one jump looks too strong on the figure, create another mix between those two paint portions.
Repeatability comes from observing relationships, not counting perfect drops. Note which parent colour dominates each step and keep the paint islands separate enough that they do not merge. For a complex project, a quick phone photo of the palette can record the layout, but always judge the dried result on the model because acrylic colour can shift as its binder clears.
When layering, apply a controlled stroke and let it dry before deciding whether the transition needs another pass. The paint on the palette may still look lighter or glossier than the cured layer. Chasing the wet appearance can make highlights too bright or shadows too dark.
The same layout works for skin, cloth and organic surfaces. For metal or very dark armour, the value steps may be narrower until the final highlight. The palette does not dictate the recipe; it keeps the recipe visible while you adjust it.
Use the extra working time on larger resin figures
Display-scale figures give colour transitions more physical room. A cloak fold can travel from a broad shadow through a midtone to a narrow edge highlight. A face may need several related skin mixtures across cheeks, brow, nose and lips. Keeping those mixtures available makes corrections less disruptive.

Work on one material family at a time. Mix the cloth range, paint the major folds, then refine it before filling the palette with unrelated colours. This reduces accidental contamination and leaves enough clean membrane to tune the steps.
Turn the figure under the painting light frequently. A smooth gradient on the palette does not guarantee a convincing form on the model. The sculpt tells you where the highlight should sit, while the palette helps you keep that highlight consistent across separated areas.

Know when a dry well is the better tool
A wet palette is designed primarily for acrylic paints that benefit from slower moisture loss. It is not automatically the right surface for every bottle on a miniature-painting desk.
Very fluid paints, washes, inks and one-coat formulas can travel through some hydration papers, stain the absorbent pad or become thinner than intended. Manufacturer guidance can differ by palette and membrane. Put those products in a dry well unless both the paint and palette makers say the combination is suitable, then test a small amount before committing.
Metallic paint also deserves a test. Some modern reusable membranes are designed to handle metallics, while other papers and painter preferences favour a separate dry palette. Keeping metallic particles away from a carefully mixed skin or cloth range is a practical reason to separate them even when the membrane can technically hold both.
Texture pastes, drybrushing paint and deliberately thick mixes usually gain little from moisture underneath. A dry tile or shallow well gives you a clearer view of their original consistency. Use the tool that supports the effect instead of forcing the whole session onto one surface.
Pause safely without trusting old paint blindly
A fitted lid reduces evaporation between sessions, but it does not freeze the paint in time. Close the palette level and store it horizontally according to the maker's instructions. Avoid tipping water into the paint or leaving the palette in heat and direct sunlight.
When you return, inspect before painting. Discard paint that smells unusual, shows mould, has formed a rubbery skin, has separated beyond remixing or has become noticeably over-thinned. Reusing a questionable mix is not worth contaminating the palette or compromising a figure.
Even apparently workable paint deserves a test stroke. Mix the portion again, check its coverage and compare the dried colour with the existing layer. A palette can preserve working time without preserving the exact ratio you left behind.
Clean the tray and absorbent pad as their manufacturer directs. Replace disposable hydration paper regularly. If you use a reusable membrane, clean it before paint fully cures and avoid abrasive tools that can damage its surface. A clean palette is easier to read and less likely to transfer old colour into a new project.
Troubleshoot the five common failures
Paint spreads into a halo. The surface is too wet, the paint is already very fluid, or both. Remove excess tray water, restore the membrane and test fresh paint. Move fluid formulas to a dry well.
Paint skins over quickly. The absorbent pad is drying, the membrane has poor contact, or airflow is crossing the desk. Add water around the edge, flatten bubbles and move the palette away from a fan or strong draught.
Paint becomes translucent during the session. Moisture is entering faster than you are using the mix. Reduce the palette water level and work from smaller paint portions. If you need lower viscosity without weakening the paint structure, use a compatible acrylic medium according to its instructions.
Paint beads instead of making a controllable island. The membrane may be installed on the wrong side, contaminated or incompatible with the formula. Confirm the orientation, clean or replace the surface, and retest with a familiar standard acrylic.
Colours become muddy. This is usually a layout problem rather than a moisture problem. Leave more space between paint families, clean the brush before entering a lighter mix, and replace a crowded sheet instead of trying to rescue every corner.
Make the palette serve the figure
The best wet-palette routine is small: prepare a flat, evenly moist surface; test one familiar paint; mix only the colour family you need; and keep checking the dried result on the sculpt. More water is not more control, and a longer working time is not a promise that every old mix remains trustworthy.
